Our inability to feel truly satisfied is perhaps one of the greatest sins of our generation. Failing to follow one’s dreams could easily be considered a mortal sin, but what if the real sin is getting lost on the path of ambition? What if we’re obsessing over our accomplishments so much that we forget to have the real human connections that are the true gifts of out existence? While chasing better salaries, larger houses, and worthier spouses motivates us, it also prevents us from having the cathartic experience that drifters have, the experiences that turn wanderers into thinkers.”

- Idil Tabanca, excerpt from Editor’s Letter (via scicchitano)

L: Proenza Schouler Fall 2011 dress with pixelated digital...

L: Proenza Schouler Fall 2011 dress with pixelated digital print

Earlier this month, Rihanna revealed to the world (or, rather, the small sliver of it that happened to catch her appearance on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show) that she is currently “pursuing a fashion line.” Fashion press, ever weary of such pronouncements, responded with a collective eye roll and a handful of well-aimed barbs at the 24-year-old star.

Celebrity designers are hardly a new phenomenon – P. Diddy debuted his Sean John label in 1998, Gwen Stefani launched her L.A.M.B. line in 2003, and Jessica Simpson founded her now billion-dollar fashion empire in 2007. All of these, however, fall under more under the category of celebrity-as-licensor than celebrity-as-designer.

One driving force behind all of the media ire surrounding the “serious” celebrity designer is the fact that we are now living in the post-Kanye West era. For the past two seasons, editors have flocked to West’s shows at Paris Fashion Week, propelled by a combination of curiosity and schadenfreude. And for the past two seasons, these shows have been critically panned: The Daily Beast’s Robin Givhan called his debut “dreadful,” citing the “unflattering” silhouettes, lack of focus, and look after look of leathers and furs – for Spring; “Good thing Kanye has a day job,” jested The Wall Street Journal.

His sophomore effort was a modest improvement, with sharpened tailoring and now-seasonally appropriate fabric choices. West, however, refused to invite any criticism this time around, barring all editors from conducting interviews or previewing the collection. Want an interview with the superstar? Not without the promise of a four-page fashion spread you don’t.

All this, despite the vast sums of time and money the rapper claims to have invested in the line. Not even Donald Trump could so deftly put the “ego” in “misbegotten.”

It is highly unlikely that Rihanna will invite the same kind of high-fashion fanfare with her own collection. For starters, it will not be her first foray into the world of design – her affordably priced capsule line for Emporio Armani is in its second season and she attests that thus far it has been “very, very successful.” The collection is fairly basic: tee shirts, jeans, leather jackets, and lingerie. Nothing to write home about, but also nothing that could ever be subject to accusations of dreadfulness.

Nevertheless, Rihanna claims to be taking her future in design very seriously. “I’m working with designers,” the pop star says. “Designers that I respect, and companies that I respect. I want people to really trust me before I just say ‘Buy it, because it’s mine.’”

suicideblonde:

This season, Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci drew inspiration from the realm of the equestrian. This was not, however, your Ralph Lauren polo prep, nor your polished Hermes thoroughbred, but rather a macabre ode to the sport – more Ichabod than Prince William, a point made even more salient by the cadaverous makeup and silk scarves wrapped like tourniquets around the models’ necks.

The runway show, which was held in the icy Lycée Carnot (heating issues, explained the apologetic PR team), began with sharply tailored jackets and an abundance of black leather. Legs were sheathed in supple boots that flared out as they reached the ankle – a nod, it seemed, to both the horse’s hoof and the classic riding boot. The outerwear, too, highlighted the material, paneled amongst swatches of wool, calfskin, and mink. The more commercial pieces were also some of the strongest here – the deceptively simple coats featuring rounded lapels and upturned velvet collars will no doubt make for many a solid investment piece come fall.

Paired with these toppers were knee-length skirts with narrow knife pleats and legions of slouchy jodhpur pants. The pants were comprehensible, if not quite flattering, in their neutral leather and satin iterations, however the 80s vulgarity of the silhouette was apparent when rendered in already-jarring yards of bright red leather. Needless to say the latter look failed to thrill, despite the inescapable Michael Jackson connotations borne by the material.

The misstep only marred a look or two, however, and could perhaps be forgiven once it became more apparent that Tisci was pulling from his stable of references the vivid, overtly sexual images of seventies photographer Guy Bourdin. The inspiration was evident in a beautiful collection of flimsy, embellished dresses, which hung from models’ shoulders by mere sinews. They were boudoir-ish, to be sure, but not quite romantic – one such slip came in a raucous palette of pale blue and tangerine, another in lilac and violet, each cinched at the waist by an equally vibrant belt.

Bourdin’s favored scarlet hue popped up throughout the collection, here peeping out beneath a sheer panel in a skirt, there enveloping a model from silk neck tie to gloved finger.

The designer’s strengths this season, as in seasons past, lay in two opposing yet complementary arenas – the masculine, as demonstrated in the succession of immaculately tailored and thoughtfully conceived jackets, and the feminine, as rendered in the sultry camisoles, sheer skirts, and glimmering embellishments that rounded out the collection.
